“The history of Haiti will break your heart. Knowing it, the weak will despair, but the caring will strive to break the chains of tragedy.” ~ Ramsey Clark
The Global Seva Challenge
I have embarked upon a journey that will be both the challenge and the opportunity of a lifetime.
Off the Mat, Into the World’s Global Seva Challenge invites yogis and activists to become leaders in their communities by raising money for local aid organizations in Haiti, where more than 1 million refugees continue to live in tents without access to food, clean water, or health care after the devastating earthquake on January 12, 2010. Even prior to the quake, Haiti was one of the poorest countries on the planet, the land and its people ravaged by years of political turmoil. Click here to learn more about the history of Haiti.
I have stepped up to take this challenge as part of my own yoga journey, committing to raise at least $20,000 in 2011 to improve the lives of people in Haiti. Eighty percent of the funds raised will directly support Haitian-run relief organizations working towards lasting solutions for the people of Haiti.
If I reach my goal, I will travel to Haiti in February 2012 to work hands-on with the people and organizations that are receiving the money we have raised. Click here to learn more about the partner organizations and projects.
The Meaning of Seva
Seva is loosely translated to “selfless service.” According to Yoga Magazine, it is more than that: “The word seva means ‘together with’ and is describing those actions that seek collective upliftment through an understanding of the needs of others and are based on togetherness and integration.”
Seva is about compassion. Seeing the divine in all people. Offering ourselves and expecting nothing in return. It’s about letting go of what holds us back as individuals and truly stepping in to the world and experiencing our fundamental connection with others.
In my yoga practice and my life, I am dedicated to working for justice and sustainability, locally and globally. I believe that at this crucial moment in our history, we must awaken to our connection as individuals to all beings and the earth beneath our feet. Working together, we can empower people to make lasting change for themselves, their communities, and the world.
